Hickok Center Participants Treated to Salon Day

HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WHAM) – There were some special guests at a Henrietta salon Tuesday. Patients from the Hickok Center for Brain Injury were treated to some pampering at Encore Salon.

“To be able to come to the salon like this and get my haircut for free, I was just so excited when we got here, I couldn’t help but tell Sandra all the time how nice it was to bring us here,” said Jessica Wurtenberg.

Sandra Faison works part time at the salon. She’s also an intern at the Hickok Center, studying social work.

“I thought it would be a great idea to bring a group of the members out to see what it is I do and to have them see what it’s like to express themselves,” said Faison.

The ladies were treated to haircuts and manicures, including Jessica Wurtenberg who suffered a brain injury in a car accident in college.

“I was in a coma for a month, but I have been very blessed with the way that I’ve been able to heal,” said Wurtenberg.

Today, she says, was a special treat.

“It’s a chance for people for brain injuries to get out and do different activities,” said Wurtenberg.

Brenda Pagliari has been living with a brain injury since 1983.

“Nice, I look good,” Pagliari said about her haircut.

That’s the goal, says Faison. She wants the ladies to feel good about themselves.

“It was important to me that they express themselves and they get what they want. It’s a form of them advocating for themselves,” said Faison.
